I definitely had a nice time 'playing' Shenmue 3. I liked the inclusion of training, they brought back the sense of community from Shenmue 1 along with the overwhelmingly large dog-eat-dog city vibe from 2. It was a horrid Shenmue narrative experience. He is out of touch, he prances around like he’s proud of it.It was a decent Shenmue gameplay experience albeit grindy. It was so bad no one wants to play another SUZUKI game. Shenmue wasn’t as niche as you think, until shenmue 3 came out and everyone trashed it. He just needs a better studio, independent game developers do more with less budget then suzuki did with millions. But my point is, a shenmue game based on his story, developed in his style but more fleshed out, is by suzuki. The turtle racing was more developed then the combat. He won’t change his mind on anything or take help from outside sources. The blame is on suzuki because he is out of touch. Original shenmue had better combat, there is no excuse. That’s like me coming out with a new diet plan and selling it and ppl ask the benefits and I go “idk I haven’t tried any diets ever” suzuki was a rockstar in the era of 2D arcade games. He literally said he hasn’t seen any modern video games or played any. Actually the best yakuza games were made with less the budget of shenmue 3.
There are independent game developers who make better combat. And that's regardless of who makes it, so it may as well be Suzuki.

The only mystery left to solve is how to convince a company to fund a final 20-30 million dollar game when it's going to make about 2 million in profits. It's a niche concept with a tiny fanbase. I'm also 100% against people trying to "rescue" a property from its creator. Assuming we're comparing Shenmue III to recent Yakuza games - they had better combat (etc.) because they had, what, 3x the budget? That's not Yu's fault, no one could do better.Ī Shenmue game without his direct influence wouldn't be Shenmue. You seem to be writing him off as some sort of crazy old man who is getting in the way of Shenmue's success. Yu Suzuki is regarded was one of the most influential names in gaming. I was so happy to get it and it really was for the fans.
It still felt like Shenmue to me, though. It feels incomplete, rough - doesn't really go anywhere. Yes, there were some questionable choices. I do think *everyone* can agree that Shenmue III was a dip in quality.
I absolutely do want Suzuki developing the next Shenmue game.

It satisfies every side of the fanbase, pro suzuki who only want shenmue if it’s from his mind + the suzuki haters who want the games only if they are developed by another studio. We all want shenmue to be based off Suzuki’s story and vision… but another studio to produce the games based off one of those forms. I think I have solved the entire communities feelings.
